Discovering Regionally Grown Natural Fibers: A Look At Our Local Fiber Systems

Have you heard of a Fibershed? How about a fiber system? Ever wonder what they mean and how it all relates to you? We'll be answering these questions and more by looking at our local fiber systems from a knitter's perspective. We will discover what locally grown natural fibers have to offer you as a knitter, what types of fiber is readably accessible in our area, and how can you find local yarns that give your hand knits a story. A curated collection of local yarns will be available for purchase after the presentation.

Bio:
Maddy is a fiber artist, educator, and sustainable fiber & fashion systems activist working to bring awareness and action to the true cost and impact of our textile consumption. Maddy has been involved with every step of the fiber process, from the textile analysis of natural fibers, to fiber processing and creating finished works through spinning, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and apparel design. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a BFA and minor in fashion studies, she focused on local fiber systems and worked her way through the fiber supply process, starting at the farm level where she learned about the agricultural side of owning sheep. After learning what was involved with raising sheep, Maddy looked to the next stage in the process and ended up working at a local fiber mill where she learned the process of taking raw fiber from local producers all the way to finished machine-spun skeins of yarn. While Maddy was working at the mill and farm, she co-founded the Three Rivers Fibershed, an affiliate branch of Fibershed, looking to create connections in the local fiber community where she currently serves as director. This work led to being contracted by Fibershed to be a research assistant for the National Mill Inventory Survey and work as the coordinator of the Minnesota Hemp Yarn project. Maddy teaches classes around the Twin Cities at the Textile Center and at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota where she is president elect.
