Each quarter, the Minnesota Knitters' Guild encourages members to knit for a special charity or community service. Our first-quarter project for 2005: the Mother Bear Project. Items are to be collected at the March monthly meeting, with the guild paying the cost of shipping our bears to their final destination.
The Mother Bear Project is a grassroots nonprofit group dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children in emerging nations, primarily those affected by HIV/AIDS.
The simple gift of a hand-knitted bear with a tag signed by the knitter has touched children who have nearly nothing in the world with the message that they are loved by someone halfway around the world.
To date, 4,674 bears have been sent to South Africa, Zambia and other countries.
