You’ll Get a Lot Out of Volunteering for the Guild

You’ll Get a Lot Out of Volunteering for the Guild

MKG Cable Gram—Volume 23, Number 2

Volunteering for MKG is a great way to introduce the textile art of knitting to those unfamiliar with it. It is also a way to get to know other guild members—and it is a lot of fun into the bargain!

Most of us volunteer in some way: by driving in a work or school carpool, chaperoning a child’s field trip, organizing a neighborhood garage sale, or baking for a fundraiser. Why not extend that experience to your knitting life? The old saying, “If you want something done, do it yourself” still holds true.

In my experience, doing so builds lasting relationships. Years ago, as a member of the Yarnover committee, I suggested Beth Brown-Reinsel as the featured teacher. Beth came to Yarnover, and I became co-chair of Yarnover for two years. The friendships created during those hours of planning continue to flourish and nourish my soul each day. It was great to be greeted by Beth when she finished registering at this year’s Yarnover.

The guild itself “volunteers” for many events each year. One of the biggest is the Minnesota State Fair in mid-August. About 40 volunteers are needed to set up the display, staff the booth (two to three people each shift), and clean up at day’s end. It is so much fun meeting friends and new knitters from all over the Midwest.

Since the Minnesota Knitters’ Guild has been our resource and support, why not nourish the guild by showing the public our love for knitting? Inspire others to follow us on the road to knitting bliss. Let’s get creative and keep our art alive!

Paula Knutzen has been a Minnesota Knitters’ Guild member since 1995. In that time, she has volunteered as MKG’s vice president, as Yarnover co-chair, and now as member-at-large; she also picks up voice messages from the MKG phone at the Textile Center. Contact her today to offer your volunteer services! You can reach her by e-mail at .
