MKG Cable Gram - Volume 21, Number 2
Are you looking for yarn produced with locally-grown wool? Gale Woods Farm is now selling yarn! This yarn offers you a new opportunity to support your local farms and farmers.
Gale Woods Farm, a working educational farm in Minnetrista operated by Three RiversPark District, raises Border Leicester, Finn, and Clun Forest sheep. Following aspring shearing, a dedicated group of Girl Scouts spent a full day skirting fleecesto prepare them for washing and spinning. Bartlettyarns, in Harmony Maine, returned the 270 pounds of wool as 37 colors of beautiful yarn.
Gale Woods Farm yarn is sold for $7/skein in 4 ounce skeins, or approximately 210 yards per skein. Bartlett yarns spins on the woolen system, for "a traditional homespun appearance, softer twist, and more bloom than worsted-spun yarns." Hence the2-ply yarns knit up to a gauge similar to the more common 4-ply knitting worsted yarns.Six skeins are sufficient for an adult medium sweater. On #8 needles, there are 4 stitches/inch.
To buy wool or for more information, stop by the farm, call the farm office, or check the website (color samples to be posted soon). Proceeds from the wool salesgo to Gale Woods Farm educational programing.
