As we prepare for holiday air travel, many of us look forward to taking our knitting projects along with us on our journeys. Finishing a few rows while awaiting the next flight can really make the wait seem shorter and ease travel tensions.

Yet since September 11, 2001, there has been much concern about carrying needles and accessories onboard commercial aircraft. We've all heard rumors of crafters having their needles and tools confiscated by airport security.

The Transportation and Security Administration(TSA) has a website listing what items are permitted and prohibited. They have a document that specifies items that are approved for carry-on, including knitting and crochet needles! Knitting needles are indeed on the list of approved items to fly with. But to help avoid any misunderstandings it's best to print that document from the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=177 and take it with you, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to mail your needles back to yourself just in case you meet scrooge at the security checkpoint on the day you travel.
