MKG-Special Event  Come Knit With Elsebeth Lavold! View Details

The Minnesota Knitters' Guild is having a Special Event and Classes on March 4, 2013

Have you ever knit with Hempathy or Silky Wool? Come meet the lady behind the yarn.
Elsebeth Lavold has spent the last 30 years as a professional designer, starting the Vikings
Knit Project in 1992. She experimented with cable patterns to create a new technique that
visually represents artifacts of the Viking age in knitting. She has 461 patterns on Ravelry,
such as Gudrid, Greip, Atle Beret, Menja and Swedish Thora, to name a few. Please go and
see how she integrates her unique cabling techniques into her patterns.

Workshop 1: - Monday March 4, 1:00 to 4:00PM (CLASS FULL)

Basic Viking Knits - 3 Hours

The focus is on the basic techniques needed to knit the wonderful Viking Patterns. Join Elsebeth as she focuses on the technical aspects of knitting Viking patterns and leads you to understand the grammar of cable patterns. How to read and understand charts. Learn how to cable without a cable needle.
Analyze Viking Interlace ornamentation and start designing your own cable patterns.
Students should know how to do basic cabling.

Workshop 2: - Monday March 4, 6:00 to 9:00PM (4 SPACES OPEN AS OF 2/20)

Basic Design with Cables - 3 hours - skill level intermediate

How to use the Viking Patterns in your own projects – designing
with cables. Basic garments shapes and calculation, cable and motif
placement. Details such as cuffs and collars and some finishing
techniques will be discussed. Students should know how to do basic cabling and have a basic understanding of garment design.

Knitting and wool is omnipresent on this North Atlantic island and has been for hundreds of years.  Learn interesting facts about Icelandic knitting heritage and how knitting developed from being a mandatory part of working on the farms for people of all ages into the nation’s favorite creative pastime. Today, all Icelanders can relate to knitting—everyone has a story to tell and around half the nation knits.
Join us as Ragga shares a brief history of knitting and sheep in Iceland from the settlement to modern times and gives us a glimpse into her family history.  She will bring a few items to show, also.

Check out www.lopilove.com to see even a hipster or two rockin their Handknits.

At the May guild meeting we will be having a Yarn tasting. Come and squish, cuddle, and even knit a few stitches with a yarn you may have only seen in a photo. We will be featuring yarns that are available mainly online. We have ordered color cards and skeins to knit with. Many of the yarns featured will be door prizes at future meetings.

We have a special request. If you have knit with or are knitting with any of the following yarns please bring your item finished or in progress to the meeting on Tuesday. We would love to see these amazing yarns knit up in all their glory.

Featured Yarns:
Blue Moon Fibers, Sundara, Miss Babs, Fiber Optic, Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, Peace Fleece, Quince and Co, Beaverslide Drygoods, and Abstract Fibers.

The guild still needs to fill a Secretarial position as well as a Vice President position. If you are interested in either of these positions please let us know by email in contacts on the web site at http:/www.knitters.org .

Please come join us on Tuesday for a very fiber filled meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.
